I got laid off
This past Friday, I got the boot. I was working as a graphic designer for a hotel marketing company. Basically, the company hired a bunch of peeps and the sales peeps couldn't keep up with our productivity. But hey, no hard feelings!!
Sure, I was a little upset at first. But I realized that this is really an opportunity! I spent the rest of my Friday afternoon getting some things organized, I wrote up a simple business plan, and made a few changes to my website. By Monday, my tax info was figure out, I had a schedule, and I started fishing for clients in a few online listings. It's been exciting.

In the words of an old boss, I am out eating what I kill. Lindsay is so supportive, even though its tough to be home, but to really be at work.
This has been a dream of mine for a while now, and this time it really just felt right. I feel more ready than ever before, and since I already have a small clientele, we should be able to make the ends meet, even in the (toughest) first months.
So now what? If you happen to know of anyone who has an ugly logo, website, packaging, or other similar stuff, send them to evanmade.com. Shoot, you could even stop by there yourself!

wait a tick!! I must interject --- I LOVE having Evan at home more! This has been a blessing in disguise for me, his poor demanding semi-invalid pregnant wife. :) He's so helpful to me when we're home at the same time. And aside from the benefits of him helping me out a ton, I get to be around my best friend more.
Bum deal but it's great you see a silver lining and have opportunities to build your own business! Therein lies the greater reward.
I run in to sooooo many terrible websites that I wish I could just smack the designers if I only knew who they were and have you help their troubled web domains. Ill keep my ears posted. wait. open.
Hey... This really is a blessing in-disguise! I'm excited for you! :) Let me know how it goes and I'll DEFINITELY send anyone your way I know. Good luck!
P.S. Did I tell you I'm going to be a German teacher? I'm excited! :)
You're doin it!! That's so awesome. I'm still doing the double-duty in-house designer & freelance on the side, so sometimes I have more work than I can chew on, so I'll for sure refer those to you if I can't do them!
I do hope to do what you're doing in the next couple years, though. It's so scary to let go of the bi-weekly paycheck though! Please keep me up to date on how it goes, and how you keep the work flowin in. I'm gonna need the advice!
And YAY! You're awesome.
Hey congrats! Not on getting the boot, of course, but on going for making a boot of your own to wear. It's so great to see friends living out their dreams. Best of luck to you!
